Dear Amy,
Choosing Data Science as a Major:
Data science is a dynamic field that merges mathematics, statistics, computer science, and specific domain knowledge to draw valuable insights from both structured and unstructured data. By choosing to major in data science, you'll be setting yourself up for a career where you'll analyze and interpret intricate data to facilitate informed decision-making. The course structure generally includes subjects like statistics, machine learning, data mining, databases, programming (Python or R), and data visualization. Additionally, you'll get hands-on experience working with real-world datasets and familiarize yourself with industry-standard tools like Tableau, Power BI, and SQL.
Expected Starting Salary:
As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median yearly salary for statisticians stood at $88,190 in May 2020. However, this figure encompasses statisticians across various industries, not just those with a background in data science. As of October 2022, Glassdoor indicates an average base salary of $75,000 annually for entry-level data scientists. It's important to note that salaries can fluctuate significantly based on the industry, geographical location, and your level of experience. For example, tech companies often provide higher salaries than other sectors due to the substantial demand for data scientists in this field.
