Catherine’s Answer

If you are currently in college, I would say that joining a student society or professional club within your major is the best way. Industry leaders provide sponsorship to those and also recruit for internships through them. These societies can also help you build your resume and prepare for interviews. They are also aware of all the career fairs and potential opportunities.

Hi Fathima
You have been given some excellent advice by mentors already. One additional thought for you to consider is to look at online references such as Indeed, Glassdoor, and Allinternship for internship opportunities. Also, most Fortune 500 companies offer internships, so depending upon you area of focus, you can hone in on those companies that have emphasis on your area of study and then seek opportunities through your schools programs or online programs to find internships that are most appealing to you.

Mickael’s Answer

Hi Fathima,

In addition to Catherine’s answer, go to companies that offer jobs in the area you want to work post graduation and check for the internship program. A lot of companies have one.
Another way is to go to forums specially designed around student/professional interactions if such events exist where you live. Also, a lot of schools/universities work with the professional so they may have a network of companies that will offer internships

Amanda’s Answer

Hi Fathima, there are some great career expos that happen every year in Sydney particularly at the universities during the summer holidays. From memory, UNSW, UTS, USyd, Macquarie, Western Sydney Uni, and all of those organisations had run them, and corporate bodies and large companies would come and present back to students or have booths where you can ask questions to professionals about the career path you are interested in. I found also there are great online tools to help you look for opportunities which you can tailor to your interests and skillsets and filter on those, and have listed some of these below for you.

LinkedIn: LinkedIn is a social media site that is widely used by professionals. It is the best site to go to if you’re looking for white collar jobs and senior roles. About 1 in 4 Australians are registered members of LinkedIn, which means there are around 6 million Aussie users in total. You can create a public or private resume or connect with employers and colleagues. Jobs become tailored to you based on your job searches, and you can subscribe to certain companies to remain updated on what positions they have available. LinkedIn is also a fantastic way to keep in touch with current and former colleagues, and network with leaders in your relevant industry 1.

Seek: Seek is one of the most popular job search websites in Australia. It has a network of job boards, so job seekers can view a wide variety of job vacancies. Seek allows users to upload their resumes or create a resume on their page. You can also search for jobs by location, industry, and salary range.

CareerOne: CareerOne is another popular job search website in Australia. It offers a wide range of job opportunities across various industries. You can search for jobs by location, industry, and salary range. You can also upload your resume and receive job alerts.

Adzuna: Adzuna is a job search engine that provides a comprehensive list of job opportunities in Australia. You can filter your search results by location, job type, and salary range. Adzuna also provides a salary estimator tool that helps you determine your worth in the job market.

Jora: Jora is a job search engine that provides a comprehensive list of job opportunities in Australia. You can filter your search results by location, job type, and salary range. Jora also provides a salary estimator tool that helps you determine your worth in the job market.

Good luck on your journey!

Rita’s Answer

When I was in college they had a career center. If one is not available, I would start looking at jobs and just start asking yourself. Even if they say no, they may be able to guide you. If you are persistent they may give you a chance.
