Great question! Most people confuse interior decorating and interior design. Picking out finishes and furniture can be fun but it is NOT interior design. Interior design requiring having knowledge about the whole space and understanding how spaces relate to one another. You are required to know fire, building, life and safety and accessibily code requirements. It is also knowing how materials, furnishings, milwork, color, sound and lighting can influence a space.

Hello SaraKate,
This is a great question - Interior Design is an exciting field to have an interest in.
If you ever walk into someone's house and look around and notice the countertops, the staircase, or other fixtures then you are definitely fascinated by the craftsmanship - and this is the first sign that you may be interested in the field of Interior Design.
I have a previous colleague that is currently achieving her Diploma in Interior Design at a technical school, and she is absolutely loving it, despite the late night sketching.
If you have a creative side to you, then you will enjoy this field. There is a heavy cost of supplies for sketch materials, but this should not deter you from pursuing it.
Do your research and find nearby institutions that offer programs in Interior Design and sit down with an Advisor to see if this is the right fit for you.
Good luck!
