Mario,
As was stated by another, a mechanical engineer and an auto mechanic are two separate careers. As a mechanical engineer, this field is always changing through the inclusion of new technologies. I am constantly being exposed to new technology that I learn about through reading and investigating state of the art information. It is recommended to have some idea of what is happening in the field by exposing yourself to publications, such as Mechanical Engineering magazine and others through ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, for example. You never know when some advancements may be applicable to things you might be working on in, say, a new product development position.
Mechanical engineering academically exposes you to many other engineering disciplines during your course of study. I recall having classes in thermodynamics, fundamental electrical engineering, materials science, polymer science, machine design and more. This field is very diverse which, to me is part of the attraction. I hope this helps answer your question but if you need me to supplement my response please let me know.

Mechanical Engineer of 19 years here and I can tell you that I still do not know everything. However that is what makes it fun. Engineering in general teaches you how to learn so you end up on a lifelong path of learning new skills no matter how old you get! Enjoy the journey!
Jose, thank you!

Mario, your question mentions both auto mechanic and mechanical engineer, and I want to clarify that those are two separate fields. Auto mechanics work on repairing vehicles while a mechanical engineer designs and engineers mechanical systems in such fields as thermal engineering, manufacturing engineering, automotive engineering, and petroleum engineering. So, a mechanical engineer can go into the field of automotive engineering where he or she would be designing and engineering automobiles. The path to becoming an auto mechanic might be a two year program at a local community college that has such a program. The path to becoming a mechanical engineer usually begins with a 4 year university degree in mechanical engineering and sometimes it is best to continue another two years to get a masters program. I hope this helps.
Thank you so much for the advice.
Mario
