Would it be respected and accepted to become a male Obstetrician and Gynecologist in USA?

Good day! I’m a 5th year medical student. I’m male and I’m honestly considering pursuing becoming an Obgyn. I would like to know if I’ll be respected, accepted and how many hours in a week I’ll be expected to work in residency, fellowship and as a Consultant.
Also how much money I’ll be able to make in my residency, fellowship and as a consultant

Courtney’s Answer

Hello. I work in an icu and we frequently take care of OB patients among several male doctors. You would definitely be accepted and respected, male obgyns are more common than people think. Follow your dreams and good luck!

Madison’s Answer

YES! There are MANY wonderful obgyns and sub-specialists who are of ALL GENDERS! Obgyn is not limited to females and many patients don’t base their preference solely on gender but pick a doctor based off other factors which are not gender based. Certainly some patients for a variety of reasons prefer or only desire female providers but in my experience it is not incredibly common

Frances’s Answer

As Kim noted, in the US the statistics are different. See this link: https://www.zippia.com/obstetrician-gynecologist-jobs/demographics/ There has been an increase of female obstetricians in the US over the years. In Hungary, there should be statistics that you can look up to see what percent male doctors go into obstetrics.

Frances recommends the following next steps:

Perform a Google search for obstetrician statistics in Hungary

Kim’s Answer

I notice you are in Hungary. I cannot speak to practices there, but, as Courtney said, here in the US it is pretty common.

De'Jahnique’s Answer

In the USA it is pretty common and I have seen a lot of people actually request male doctors over females. I have had a male and a female as my OB and I had a great experience.
