Most common is that tuition is charged "per credit" where each course is typically three or four credits (although I have seen courses ranging from one to six credits). Your basic tuition charge will be based on the number of courses that you take each semester. Full-time is usually between 12 and 18 credits and part-time is anything less than 12 credits - you normally get to decide how many classes you will take each semester.
There may also be additional (nuisance) fees such as Technology fees for technical classes which vary cross universities,

Room and board are extra. Meals are extra.

All universities and colleges will have both Financial Aid and Academic Advisor offices where you can visit to get answers to your questions.

You pay per class but by the semester. Full time is 12 hours. Generally classes are typically 3 hours credit. So each semester you would take 4 classes to meet the “full time criteria” the college will break down the price per hour but there are rarely 1 credit hour courses. So for example say each credit hour is 200.00 that would make a 3 hour credit class 600.00 if you take 4 classes that 2400 per semester. Now depending on your major that decides how many and what type of classes you take.

Jerry’s Answer

College tuition is basically an amount per course. The amount of the tuition is based on the number of credit hours. For example, if tuition at a certain college is $100 per credit hour, a 3 credit hour course tuition would be $300. Most of your basic courses are 3 credit hours, though some that for example include a lab may be 4 credit hours, and PE courses are typically 1 credit hour. In addition to tuition, there will also be additional charges such as building use or facility fees.
