Briannah,

What interest you?
What companies are you able to commute to ?
Do you know other people that have done internships that they enjoyed?
Check in with your guidance counselor?
Check out volunteer opportunities in your community (churches, non profit, community centers, etc) as they opportunies to learn and grow and it looks great on a resume too!

Good Luck!

Hi Briannah! I think it's great that you're looking into internships. They're a great way to start gaining experience to figure out what you do and don't like and have experience to put on your resume.

I think where you want to intern will depend on what your interests are. Using Indeed and LinkedIn to filter internships would be a great place to start. They normally break down what type of experience you might need for the opportunity and also give a breakdown of what you would be doing at the internship. Sometimes if they post who the posting/hiring manager is, you can always contact them directly to ask any additional questions you might also have.

You can also find local opportunities through volunteering, maybe at a local animal shelter or you could look into local hospitals or clinics for volunteer opportunities?

Hope this helps!

Andreina’s Answer

While I was employed at a neuroscience research lab, my role included mentoring high school interns. I would often inquire about their interests and the type of experience they hoped to gain. If they were unsure, I would present a broad array of fields for them to investigate and connect them with Ph.D. candidates or professors who were open to having interns observe and help with their ongoing projects.

All the interns needed to do was compose an engaging letter of interest and submit it to the department for distribution to PIs (Principal Investigators) seeking assistance. This means that if you're passionate about a particular field, such as law, science, education, or even design, crafting a persuasive letter of interest can be key. Many internship opportunities go unadvertised, so taking this proactive step can often be exactly what potential mentors are looking for in an intern.

Hi Briannah!

It depends on your interests and what you want to pursue your career in. Once you figure that out, reach out to people you know who might be working in the same industry and seek internships, search online, newspaper ads etc. Internships will help lay a solid foundation and also equip you with real experiences. Best of luck!!
