Research which area of data science you want to pursue and build a portfolio of projects. Practice all of the current programming languages and data visualization software. Focus on and practice telling the story to a non-data centered audience.

Are you pursuing Computer Science degree right now?
If not this is the 1st step.
Take courses if offered by the Univ in BI, AI and other Analytics to pursue your dream.
Cybersecurity is the ideal place but first pursue Computer Sc degree before becoming Data Scientist profession.

The blunt answer is that it's a lot harder to get started in DS than it was a few years ago. The field has been in the spotlight a lot, which has led to a lot of non-very-good schools and bootcamps springing up with promises of high salaries right out of the gate. So supply now greatly exceeds demand, at least for entry-level roles. Unless you have a PhD in a quantitative field, expect an uphill battle.

Depending on your background, it may make more sense to pursue roles in a related subject, such as generalist software engineering, or data engineering, and then try to transition internally into a more DS-centric position. Also, data analyst and business intelligence roles, though less glamorous, are easier to get and are often seen as a stepping stone to DS proper.

Form a strong educational foundation within statistics, math, and/or computer science. Couple this with hands on skills in Python, and SQL. Learn about Machine Learning, there are lots of resources available online from Stanford's CS229 course. Maybe pick up a jupyter notebook and start playing around with rapids. https://www.dataquest.io/blog/jupyter-notebook-tutorial/.

Thank you comment icon I have learned these skills. Now I am looking for internships. Sami

Hello, Sami!
If you're going to school and getting a degree that is analytics focused and/or it happens to be in the operations research, physics or math area, the transition should be easier. Considering you're in NY, I would suggest subscribing to a couple of email alerts such as fortune, termsheet, and robinhood snacks. You will be able to identify newly financed companies in the NY area and considering more companies are doing something related AI or even consumer(though investment is weaker in this area) they will need DS interns.

Interns' web applicant numbers are significant. Reach out directly to a leader in the business using LinkedIn.

One other comment I'd make is that larger companies; Google, FB, Stitchfix usually maintain the Early Talent programs even in a downturn so don't let recent layoffs scare you from sending your information to a potential employer.

Data science is a field a number of technology companies are in need of. However, several retail and medical services companies use data to make day-to-day minor and major decisions; offering internships that can result in entry-level opportunities. I would suggest you start with a search of job websites to determine the most commonly required credentials. Once you have that list be sure to check which are relevant to what you want to do and determine if you need to acquire certifications, training, etc. Next, go online to see if you can acquire any of these skills free of charge.

Machine learning and repetitive process automation are other avenues to consider. Good luck!
