Brittany’s Answer
I worked with adults prior to working in pediatrics. Ive been a nurse for almost 10 years now and half of my career was in each.
I had always felt that I wanted to work with children, so I made a switch. Children have a lot going on and you have to also work with their families as well. Its definitely different than adults however it is more rewarding--at least to me!!

I am not a paedetrician but if i were to switch to a medical from my teaching profession to the medical field I would gladly focus on the paediatric department. My experience during my first twin birth made me understand how important and how hard these doctors work to save lives. How they are connected to these babies even at their neo-natal stage.
The top notch caring service from the paediatric nurses was another loving and unforgettable memory. They were all working tirelessly hard to make sure everyone's child is saved. They connected so well with this babies and made so much impact. All of these experiences made fall in love with Everyone that worked in the paediatric department.

I did a rotation in adult treatment and pediatric. Although I enjoyed adult care, I really felt like I connected with children easier. I agree with Brittany, you need to be aware that families are a large component in pediatric care. I like that no two days are the same. I can see the same child for the same thing two days in a row and have completely different experience. In my field, I've had the opportunity to refine my target population to treating 2-6 year olds. Once you're in industry I think you start to feel a pull in a direction, where somethings feel more natural than others. That's how I've progressed through my career.
shadow adult or pediatric practitioners
volunteer in adult/pediatric settings
