What job should I take that will make me rich and will also give me some free time.

I would like to be a psychiatrist, a novelist, a vet, a surgeon, or a travel nurse. I want to make sure I have a nice income that will help me out with bills and such. I also would like to have time to travel as well. I want to be able to buy me and my dog some nice items and maintain a nice life with travel.

Jason’s Answer

First and foremost you should try to identify what professions you would find personally and professionally rewarding, not just jobs that offer a high salary. Only you can answer what those careers would be. If the sole reason that you enter a profession is money, then there is a good chance that you'll find yourself unfulfilled.

Once you have identified a list of professions that excite you, do your research on them. Figure out which ones are likely to also fulfill your financial goals, then figure out what the cost is to get such a career in terms of time/money invested in school/training. Research what the typical time investment is for a professional in those fields.

Given the possible careers that you've listed it sounds like you might have a preference for something in the medical field. Such careers require a massive time and monetary investment in schooling and many also require extremely long working hours (which sounds like it may not align with your desired goals). Make sure that this is something that you are truly passionate about pursuing before you commit down this path. No doubt that these careers can be both professionally and financially rewarding if you put in the work.

A job such as software engineer can pay very well and offer a ton of flexibility for traveling since you can work remotely for many companies. However, free time can be hard to come by at times.

There are tons of great options for careers out there and it really comes down to what your skills and professional interests are.

Best of luck!

Hi Diana!

It looks like Edison and Jason have both offered some great words of wisdom, so I'll just add in a couple of book and podcast recommendations that I think can lend themselves well to finding the right balance of a career you enjoy, and the income you need to live a comfortable life.

As far as books go, two wildly popular (and for good reason!) recommendations would be Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and The 4-hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. Both are available in audiobook format as well, so if you have a membership to your local library, you can likely access either the paperback, audio, or electronic formats for free. These books have been incredibly influential in my life when it comes to asking myself the right questions to elicit the highest impact answers.

In terms of podcasts, BiggerPockets has several great shows that focus on different areas of personal finance and investing, and Money with Katie is another great intro to all things personal finance.

Finally, the Mr. Money Mustache blog (https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/) is a really great resource if you decide to join the FIRE (financial independence, retire early) community.

Often, there is no single path or single income source that will yield the exact lifestyle you're searching for, but as a general recommendation, I would recommend looking for a flexible remote job that you enjoy, and try to learn as much as you can in your first ~2 years there. After that, apply for new roles (both internally and at new companies) that will help you build upon your existing skillset, and then repeat this process in another 3-4 years. This should help you maximize your earning potential fairly early on in your career.

If you can do this while sticking to a budget and investing even on a small scale in ETFs, index funds, real estate, or other tried and true investment vehicles, you'll be in a great spot to enjoy a life of traveling and working on whatever projects inspire you!

Hi Diana;

Every single career has a specialized individual who is the best at what he or she does! This is called “the Expert” the expert specializes in the part of any given career that requires a set of skills and a curriculum along with a pedigree education! So in order to become It” you must also invest in your education and work hard to obtain your goals!

Take an inventory of what you like to do and become really good at it! And specialize in that field! Think about the world of technology for example- The tech giants found a niche that fit between the world of technology and is used for every single person in the world ‘ if you can channel that!! Then it’s victory all around

EZINNA EDGE’s Answer

The simple truth is that there is no particular job that guarantees you will become rich. Truth be told, in every profession and offices we have the rich and the poor. For instance, many people have been in the automotive industry before Tesla's founder and owner Elon Musk, yet he beat them to become the richest man in the world.
Don't forget that their are cobblers wealthier than doctors.

All the careers you mentioned above can make you rich, but there is no guarantee that a particular career or job will make you rich. However, putting in your best in whatever it is you do and creating opportunities for yourself by preparing in advance will make you rich.

Finally, you can never have enough time to travel and do stuffs you love in another persons business.
