Dietetics can be a particularly tricky field to get into, especially if you want to be a Registered Dietitian. Find a good program that will allow you to do your dietetic internship along side your Masters Degree - even better if you can find a paid one!
If you are interested in the field, but aren't quite sure, I would suggest looking at becoming a dietetic tech in certain places to get experience and find what areas of dietetics you are most interested in. The best tool is to ask your professors and become close, this will help as they will often have better job opportunities in newer fields.
When you first start out at a hob, you may look into more PRN opportunities as you can often be exposed to many new areas at once to make you a better RD!
Tips: find nutrition related jobs around your campus to bulk up your resume prior to applying for internships (campus cafeteria, football/ any sports, student health center). Always be curious and assertive! Good Luck!

Mallori’s Answer
The dietetics field holds so many different opportunities based on what your unique interests are. You could pursue clinical (working at a hospital), outpatient counseling, private practice, culinary nutrition or even long term care. I would suggest you look for an RD in an area you are interested in and ask to job shadow them. It’s important to see what the day to day entails in the life of an RD. Many schools offer dietetics programs, I would suggest finding a school that offers an internship and Masters program all in one. An internship is required to be able to sit for the registration exam.
Best of luck to you!
Best of luck to you!

Hello! All of the current answers are great, and I would just like to add one thing- look into public health! When it comes to something like diabetes, it is important to understand it from a medical point of view, as well as a public health point of view. You can learn about things like social determinants of health, health disparities and where they come from, as well as learning unique ways to tackle the prevalence of diabetes in certain populations.

No matter what career choice you choose you can always make your own path. My director was an RD and ended up making her own career ladder to become head of hospital operations. I know others that have gone into culinary nutrition. Some use their experience to prep new grads wanting to get into the field or even to help grow and nurture their community with garden and giving projects.
Informatics is also a growing field and there are dietitians contributing in the tech word as well.
I agree with the previous statements on shadowing someone as well as just exploring different hobbies and interests.
Shadow an RD
Explore different avenues of nutrition to see what interests you
Network with people in the field
Find a mentor

Hi Victoria,
Dietetics is a great career field with many options to consider under it including private practice.
you might start by considering different entry requirements for college/university of your choice, then your state's requirements for dietetic license.
But overall, a good grasp of Biology, chemistry, maths and actively involving in sports could help steer you in the right dietetics spécialisation.

Outside of the education realm, be interested in food and cooking! From my experience as a culinary nutritionist, many in the field of dietetics know a lot about the science of nutrition but not so much about how to put that information into action in the kitchen. It is hard to eat healthy if you don't know how to cook and make healthy food taste good. Besides getting my master's degree in clinical nutrition I also went to cooking school for health-supportive cooking. That was one of the best things I have done for myself personally and professionally.
People are looking for ways to make healthy eating easy and streamlined. Knowing how to cook healthy foods but not have it take too much time is a great skill to have. Hope this helps!
Take some classes on healthy cooking
Always be experimenting in the kitchen
