Ishan’s Answer

Hey Chris! Great question! As an engineer, I really love that no day is like the others. Every day at work I come across a new challenge in which I have to think outside the box to fix, and that is something we engineers love to do. It is also great to work around like-minded people who you can bounce ideas off of and not feel the need to put anything in layman's terms. Since this promotes a fast-paced environment, I am never bored at work and 5pm comes by really quickly!

David C’s Answer

I agree with Ishan. There is no greater feeling than to design or assist in development of a product, concept or what the task is. Especially when there is nothing existing at the time you can have match the needed. I remember working for a Johnson & Johnson company in research and engineering as an Equipment Designer. What a awesome job that was! I worked with scientists and engineers developing new products that needed to have hardware designed for testing or validating the product. Many times I would have to design something just for that product meaning it had to be invented. As a result, I ended up being a part of about six United States patents.

The challenges and solutions meant everything.

Artem’s Answer

There is a bit of confusion between mechanical engineering and software engineering, so here is some perspective from a software engineer.

It is relatively easy to make a big impact, you can build something and put it in front of millions of people.

There is something new to learn every day, so it is a good way to keep yourself on your toes :)

Thinking out of the box, and finding creative solutions, you always solve new problems.

Elliot’s Answer

I enjoy being an engineer. If you like creating solutions to solve simple or complex problems engineering is a good field to get into. Thought-out my day I am dealing with problems that I am able to measure the efficacy of the solution I create. I enjoy solving complex problems and seeing the reviewing results.

Jackie’s Answer

Ditto-ing both of these responses! I think the key thing here is to find something that you're passionate about, whether it's product development or solving new challenges. For me, I've always wanted to work on cutting edge stuff such as autonomous systems. I currently work on drone simulation in Unreal Engine, and it's about the coolest thing ever. I also enjoy the shorter life cycles that come with software development because I can develop new features for our clients and realize the efforts of my work frequently.
