Hi, Jaqayja.

It's great that you're considering this aspect of working in security. I would recommend learning about de-escalation techniques. Another great resource is becoming certified in first aid such as CPR and AED. I would also recommend looking into mental health first aid certifications so that you can be more informed on how to contend with and help people who many be having a mental health episode and causing a security concern.

Jason’s Answer

Soft skills like communication, empathy and working well with people are extremely important in the workplace. It helps you get to decisions quicker when you understand and can easily communicate with someone about their needs or concerns about a project for example. Being someone who helps others is also an important characteristic you build as a Security Guard.

Blanche’s Answer

I'd work on your soft skills, take an emotional intelligence test to see where your biases might be. Create specific opportunities to challenge yourself. For example if teenagers are a trigger for you, try to understand them etc. The best way to improve your skills and get more is to work on you. Find a mentor or a person you feel is what you'd like to become, what is it about them that you admire? Why do you admire them? What do you have to do to mirror their actions? Practice makes perfect.

Michael’s Answer

With respect to your present job as a security officer, your personal exchanges help you to know and identify the personas of the people who enter your facility. In addition, if trouble should arise, you'll be able to readily identify who does (and does not) belong. Furthermore, it enhances your interpersonal skills for a potential new position waiting for you in the future.
