What are the prerequisite of astro physics?

I am interest in learning more about physics within our world. Space is a very unique and it's a vast area that we humans have only dabbled in. The universe is indefinite and learning more about the subject will help us explore more about the realm of space and its functionality.

Loriel’s Answer

Every college’s prerequisites vary. It is best to reach out to the college you wish to attend and go from there. Ideally, it’s best that you be good with Math and Science.

As an example, I’ll provide you with the prerequisites from the institution I work with. You’ll notice that with the bachelor of arts in physics it doesn’t require as much math and science as it what if you were to get a bachelor of science in physics.

Hope this helps!

Andrew’s Answer

There are two levels of answer to your question.

1. If you are interested in learning about physics and astronomy, there are physics/astronomy courses in college for student not in STEM area. You will have the opportunity to be exposed to fascinated aspects of physics/astronomy around us. However, this is only a glimpse on the surface of the world of physics/astronomy.

2. If you are interested in making a career in astrophysics, the prerequisite will be a commitment in STEM area – a Bachelor of Science in physics. Mathematics and physics are the keys to unlock the door to astrophysics. It should be appreciated that astrophysics is a specialty in physics at the Ph.D. level. Hence, it will be attained after a Master of Science degree in Physics. Moreover, you will have to choose a graduate school/institution in which a doctoral program in astrophysics is offered.

Rich’s Answer

Are you passionate about understanding the many mysteries of space in your spare time? Do you own a telescope or go on-line to follow the stars? Do you regularly visit the NASA and other space agency’s web pages for latest discoveries? Are you the person who always wants to talk about what they have learned about the stars, other planets, etc?

If so, you are probably well on your way to being a great. astrophysicist and just need to put in the work as highlighted in the other great posts. If not, doing a few of the things above may help you understand if the field is something you really are interested in devoting your life to or perhaps just an interesting hobby. Either way, keep looking to the stars and be true to what is right for you.
