Hi ISAIAH!
Some great jobs for high school students include being a dog walker, being a pet sitter, babysitting, tutoring younger children, working at a retail store part time, working at your place of worship (such as a church) if that applies to you, being a lifeguard, working at a Christmas tree farm, being a ticket taker at your local summer fair, working at a library putting back books- there's so many possibilities ! One thing you can do is ask a teacher to help you create a resume. You won't have much to put- but it can convey your interest and seriousness if you give it out when canvasing for jobs. There's also many FREE student templates online too.

One important thing to consider is if you are seeking a summer job- start your search EARLY! Don't wait until May, by then many places have the student workers picked already. You can set yourself up for success by approaching places nearby in April, with your newly created resume, and letting them know you'd love to work there if an opening comes up. Always dress professionally as well when you are job seeking and meeting possible employers. What I mean by that is dress like you are headed to a formal event, a little blazer and crisp pants or a nice dress, whatever is comfortable for you. You want to look put together. You can also start asking your friends & family now if they know of any jobs that might be good for you in your town. Best wishes ! Melle

Hi Isaiah!

I think it's great that you are wanting to work while in high school! Your job search will depend on your school schedule and if you want a seasonal or regular part-time job. These would be great jobs for a teen in high school:
- Retail
- Cashier/Clerk
- Delivery Driver
- Pet sitter / dog walker
- Movie theater cashier/usher
- Grocery Store Associate
- Postal Service Worker
- Food industry (waiter/waitress, dish washer, host, cook, etc.)
- Lifeguard (seasonal/summer)
- Barista

Any of these would be great for a high school senior; however, it depends on what you have an interest in doing. You could also look for internship opportunities as well!

Best of luck!

Shawn’s Answer

Hi Isaiah,

Kudos to you for looking for work while in high school!

You've received some great answers from others here, so I'll give you a specific answer for a place you might want to consider: Dairy Queen.

My youngest son is 16 years old and has worked at Dairy Queen for over 1.5 years. From his standpoint, he has thoroughly enjoyed working there. From my standpoint (as a parent), I couldn't be happier with the company.

The company does a very good job of training new employees and taking care of them once they are hired. Employees are treated and paid very fairly, there is relatively little turnover, and they offer very flexible scheduling (with good online calendar/scheduling tools).

My older son has worked for a couple other fast food restaurants and grocery stores. His experiences were overwhelmingly negative at these places, which my youngest son's experiences have been overwhelmingly positive at Dairy Queen. In fact, our older son will likely apply at Dairy Queen when he comes home from college this summer.

Keep in mind each Dairy Queen location is a franchise, so each location may have a different feel. However, the corporation is top notch and has been very fair.

Good luck to you!

Shawn

Daniel’s Answer

Great question Isaiah!

When I was a teenager I worked at an amusement park. I had a lot of fun making friends and getting to work at a place that was so much fun! Think about working a job that you may want to start a career in or maybe try a job that you know might not pay well but you love doing it. My point is try a job that you really want to before you get older and really need the money.

I was a train engineer that worked on a real steam train from the 1880's. The pay was horrible but the friends I made and the experiences I had was great! I am glad I tried it when I was younger because now I could not afford that to be my only source of income. Don't be afraid of failing because if you do you are young enough to brush it off and try something else.

If I could encourage you to read one business book it would be the book below.

Eric’s Answer

There are two paths you can choose to secure a job:
1) Perform a self assessment on what you are good at and find a job related to your skill(s)
- Look for a job that will improve and enhance your skills
- You can then leverage that job to find a better one while completing high school
- Invest the money earned for college, for investment opportunities, or yourself (college courses)
2) Perform a self assessment on a skill that you would like to try or need improvement on
- For example, if you need work on your negotiation and communication skills, find a sales job in retail
- If you would like to work on social skills, try a job as a waiter
- If you would like to work on resolving issues, find a job as a customer service representative
Working on either path will increase your skills to give you greater experience and help prepare you for college and beyond.
I wish you well in finding a job.

Deanna’s Answer

Really what you are passionate about or interested in, coupled with what your relevant skills are, is probably the most important thing! I would also recommend considering both paid and non-paid options, if you are not looking for a job because of financial need, but instead to get work experience or skills training. If your primary goal is to get work experience, then there are also many volunteer options that can provide skills building and a way to also give back to your community.

Alex’s Answer

Hi Isaiah,

Since you are still in highschool, my recommendation is to seek a part-time job that offers flexibility as to not to interfere with your studies. Some of the jobs that offers flexibility in ones schedule can be a cashier, a bagger or a clerk at a grocery store. You can also elect to be a server, a dishwasher or a host at your local restaurant. Another option depending on your strength in a specific school topic, you can tutor a younger student that needs help in a specific topic you are strong in.

All the jobs mentioned above are in a specific industry that should have the flexibility you would need to easily manage both school activities and making a few extra bucks on the side on your spare time.

Hope that helps and best of luck!
