There is a ton to say for this answer. But here are some keys that work for ANY artistic field:
Color theory (what colors work well together), Composition (How to arrange items in relation to the space and to one another), History (of architecture in this case), Materials (what works great with what), psychology (who is this job for, who are they, what do they value, what makes them feel at home and how does this translate into decoration?), Feng shui (less of a joke than people think), Trends (wabi sabi, barn, boho...), negative space (can't stress this enough. The importance of what's NOT there)
Outside of that, business! No matter what you want to do, if you want to do it alone (freelance or entrepreneur), make sure you understand the principles of business. Your passion is easy to develop, you will instinctively look at other architects or firms and identify what makes them good, figure out which ones you like, etc. However, success comes from business, you should have an understanding of what works and what doesn't in a company, what got them there and how to grow and run one yourself. Alternatively, you can always work for a brand, colleague or firm and leave all of this for later while you grow your experience (much more recommended.)
