Michel’s Answer
Why is a hard question, but I will try to answer it. I looked into going PA also looked at nursing for a little bit, but decided on medicine for a couple reasons. One of the biggest reasons was I love long term learning. I also absolutely love science and what causes human disease and what we are doing to fix that disease. There are so many components that you can learn. Think of any field and medicine and you can study it for a lifetime and still never know every component of it. You can try to know it all but you never will be able to because of all of the variables and different aspects and outcomes of different patients. Medicine as a doctor allows you to explore the nitty gritty details it gives you practice during medical school then in residency and then you get to help the next generation. It takes a longer time but that longer time is to ensure that you are ready to practice independently and able to teach to the high level that is expected out of doctors. The other degrees have shorter periods of learning and may be skipping over some of the nitty gritty that I got into medicine for. When things are really bad they are going to the specialist you can break the problem down into a manageable piece. All of the careers in medicine are important, but medicine had the components that I liked the most.

The ability to perform surgery while also seeing patients for lifelong and preventative healthcare in the clinic, delivering babies, being a part of family planning care, taking care of patients of a large variety of ages, diverse diseases, diverse patient populations, being a part of big important (good or bad or scary) moments in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding (having a baby, having a pregnancy loss, getting a cancer diagnosis, having a major surgery, having a family planning procedure). Being someone people trust and want to be there during these vulnerable exams and moments in their lives is incredibly special and rewarding!

Consider the longer time in school in an investment in you. The road is longer because the reward is greater. It’s better to endure struggle early while you are young and full of extra energy. When you start a family you are established and very valuable. This is the setup for long term happiness. Things that are good usually don’t come real easy….. The Reward for OBGYN is phenomenal if it’s the career you want. Grind hard so you can play hard.
