Hello Nathalie,
I have recently retired from a 30+ year career as a dental hygienist.
It was a wonderful career for me! If you have a passion for health career it is a great alternative & better hours than nursing.
If you remain in California you will find that DH has larger “scope of practice” an will have a more rewarding!
I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Nathalie,
My wife is a DH and has been in her field since 2013. She is absolutely happy with her decision to choose this as her career. She loves the hours/schedule, fair wages, great work environment, and ultimately educating and helping people. One thing she must do is take care of her body as she spends a lot of time in uncomfortable positions throughout the day.

I have been a full time hygienist for over 22 years. It has been a great career for me. What I like is that I work independently from the dentist, one on one with patients. I have moved to a couple different states and I’ve easily gotten a license to practice and very easily obtained employment. The compensation is very good. Not all dental hygiene positions come with benefits. If you’re interested it would be helpful to ask a local dentist if you could come in and observe the hygienist a couple hours or whenever your schedule allows. This may give you a chance to ask more specific questions or you may see whether or not you’d be interested in hygiene as a career.
