Find ways to get exposure to different industries and different career paths. If there are career clubs at your school, join clubs that spark your curiosity and align with your interests and strengths. Career clubs typically have guest speakers from that industry and also host career fairs. Attend them! Talk to people. Ask questions.

As you make connections with people who work in different fields and jobs, you can request an informational interview with that person.
The purpose of the informational interview is to learn more about their career path and/or current job. Ask them for advice on how you can learn more about their line of work if you find it interesting.

It is very common to not know what you want to do. Finding your path is a constantly evolving journey, even after you start your career. Someone else mentioned "Trial and error" and I absolutely agree. Just pick a starting point and go! As long as you're learning, you are making progress.

maybe ask if you like working remotely and independently (computer or programming )
or maybe you like math and physics and consider a technical field such as engineering.

College is the best place to figure out what you want to do with your life. I would recommend taking all your gen ed classes first and add in some classes for topics you may be interested in. Its trial and error and when you find something you like you will know its the career for you. Don't be discouraged if it takes a while. youve got this!

I think the best way to answer this question is to ask yourself what are you passionate about? If you find something you love, then it will never feel like a 'job'. One of the best ways to figure out what you are passionate in is to try many different things. If you are in high school or college this could be by joining various organizations or clubs. One thing to keep in mind, is if you decide you don't like something that you don't need to keep doing it forever. High School and college are great times to seek out new experiences and find the things that truly give you joy. In some industries, you can volunteer, so you get a little deeper experience and can determine if it is the right fit. Once you find something you want to pursue, then maybe consider an internship or summer job.

Hi Jasmine,

The best way is to look into several careers. If your school offers a "career day" definitely attend. This will give you a sneak peek and allow you to talk to professionals in a particular field. Also, find out what interests you and possibly look into internships at companies in your area. You can find this out by contacting the human resources departments at a particular company. You may have several jobs before you find out one that you enjoy going to on a daily basis. Remember to look for a career and not just a job. Lastly, look into your local building trade organizations and see if they have internships and apprenticeship programs in your area.

Taking a career test is probably the easiest way to figure out the perfect job for you. There are a lot of career assessments that are readily available online and are intended to guide you in choosing a career path. It is important you understand which type of career test you are taking.
If you wake up and you are excited to go to your job and feel passionate about what you are doing, then most likely you found your career. When your values and the company you are working for values are aligned is another way you know you are in the right career.

Michael’s Answer

This is really a fantastic platform for this question. I dont believe in one answer for the initial question asked however I want to leave you with a few questions to ask yourself.

Is it a job, a career, a duty, or a responsibility?
Are you in a position where you can be picky?
If you could do anything, what would you look into further?

Being passionate about your career focus can make "work" FUN! Consider your financial goals, and look years into the future. Can you live with the hours, the pay, the responsibilities? Do you have to consider anyone else in your decision making converstaion? If not, shoot your shot and understand that it is okay to go back to the drawing board. Enjoy the journey and make sure to offer others advise based on decisions you have or have not made so that they can find their own way.

Thanks,

Laura’s Answer

Hi Jasmine,
I think you start with listing off the things you like to do because first and foremost doing something that you like to do will make working that much more enjoyable. Then you can start looking into colleges that offer programs that relate to your likes. You may find that something you thought you wanted to do changes along the way and that is okay too, you don't have to make the decision and stick with it. We are allowed to change our minds.

Mike’s Answer

To know what you really want to do is to not ask the question. Don't even think about the question. Pretend you are going to put off addressing the question for a week. Instead think of something else you would really like to put off doing, some task that is an obligation you really don't want to do. Now you are in a good place. You have this open time to avoid that which you don't want to do. Wait and watch yourself look for something to do. What will it be? That will be your first clue. Soon you will find yourself gravitating to some activity that is or very near to what you REALLY think about, and it will lead you to what you REALLY want to do.

Velvet’s Answer

See what interests you and go off of what you like. Definitely pick a career that you will be excited to go to for work and is a passion of yours. You can do anything you set your mind too and make a plan to achieve that goal.
