Jason’s Answer
It depends on the type of post you have and what industry. Corporate security can range from a normal 9-5 to a split shift where you start at 7a and get relieved at 3p or start at 1p and end at 9p. The best roles will of course be during the peak hours for the client where you can interact with people and provide support. If you like quiet shifts, then looking for a PM or after hours shift would make sense.

This can vary heavily on the type of security you are going to provide. If you are looking to be in the secret service, you could expect to work 12 hours or more daily.

The number of hours a security guard works depends on the needs of the security company. It’s no different then any other job. They will hire for part-time (avg. 20 hrs.) and full -time 35-40 hours. The shifts may vary from 12 hours to 4-6 hours and it can be either day or night. It depends on the type of account you are assigned to by your supervisor. I have heard there’s a shortage of personnel to fill security guard positions. So you can most likely ask to work the hours and shifts that work best for you.
There are a myriad of different types of roles in security and duties you may be asked to do. In college I worked as a security guard. I worked nights being assigned to various businesses. One of them was as a night watchman walking a large Caterpillar factory. I also walked night club parking lots and I did armed security for a pharmacy. I had to complete a background check that included taking my fingerprints. Back then I also handled loss prevention in retail stores that meant apprehending shoplifters and having them picked up by law enforcement. I have a family member who helps manage a security company. Their primary business is guarding and monitoring the premises of television & movie film locations. They also handle special events like concerts and festivals. Security guard positions tend to be stepping stones to other career opportunities. In my case it paid the bills while I went to college for a degree.
Good luck and I wish you the best going forward.
