What is a better minor for someone majoring in Operations Management between supply chain management and accounting?
Both interest me a great deal, but I am interested in the practicality of either degree for my major or in the job market. Thank you for any insight or advice!

Personally, supply chain management to me would likely tie in better with your major. While accounting knowledge can be useful, it does feel a but like a departure from what youre currently studying

Hi Mitchell -
This is a great question and I think it is fantastic you are thinking critically about your minor and how it will help your future career!
Supply chain management is a broad field and would apply to many roles across many industries. This may not be as advantageous as a minor, given how broad it is. A minor in accounting, however, may provide you with a good foundational knowledge around how businesses operate and make financial decisions, which would differentiate you from your peers. As a professional who has employed operational supervisors and managers, I can attest that seeing a small background in accounting and finance would indicate that you are well-rounded and have an interest in understanding financial principles. A minor in accounting will by no means make you capable of fulfilling an accounting role, but you will understand at a high-level how your role may interact or impact the accounting side of a business. To have an understanding of basic principles that you could use to apply to operational decisions may serve you well by differentiating you from your peers and in the long run improving your decision making as a manager. Basic accounting principles can make you a better businessperson, and may help you with personal finance, as well.
Hope this helps and best of luck to you in your schooling and future career!

I would suggest Business Management or any minor related business major. Additional it would hurt to look into any IT Business minors.

Hi Mitchell,
I believe both minors are good and it really depends on what career you want to pursue in the future. My major was Accounting and in my current role, I interact with a lot of Managers/Directors on the Operations side (Casino/Gaming) and let me tell you, accounting knowledge is definitely helpful. However, if you are looking more at something behind the scenes, then a minor in Supply Chain management would be beneficial. Hope that helped and remember, you can always change your mind if something doesn't feel right!

Hey Mitchell! Congrats on the choices! I hope you'll succeed in any of your decisions.
My opinion is that you could major in Supply Chain Planning instead of Accounting because during the SCP course you'll have some subjects of accounting too. I don't think you would have the same in the other way around. This way you would get some knowledge of accounting while majoring in Suply Chain. I hoipe it helps. ;)

Hi Mitchell.
I would suggest a different option. Do a minor in Data Science. Automation and data are huge influences and areas of growth within Operations and Supply Chain management. Coming in with a good understanding of that will help set you apart from your competition and also bring valuable skills to quickly accelerate your career.
You most likely will go back to school for an MBA at some point in your career. At that time you will be able to take a few courses focused on Supply Chain Management as well as Accounting in that MBA curriculum.

Supply chain would be better tween the two as they are more closely related. I would also suggest looking up Project Management as it is a very complimentary field to operations management.

Hi Mitchell,
My advice is to minor in Supply Chain Management. My 20+ year career has been in the technology industry in global supply chain and global business operation roles. The work is challenging, and I have enjoyed every day. A minor in Supply Chain Management will allow you to grow your career in a number of ways. I believe your Operations Management degree fundamentals would include accounting coursework to acquire the basic accounting principles. In my line of work, I have not needed accounting knowledge beyond the basic principles. I partner with finance colleagues to deliver on business goals. I am a firm believer that in everyday life it is invaluable to be able to read and understand a company’s financials. You can acquire this knowledge without minoring in accounting. I hold a BBA in General Business and happened to of worked for an accountant during semester breaks. Wishing you an abundance of success!

I assume accounting. It is more generic. I assume you can learn supply chain on the job. More roles require accounting skillset than supply chain skillset.
