That's great to hear that you want to pursue writing and producing music to help people cope and bring joy to their lives. Here are some tips that could help you start your journey:

1. Learn music theory: As a songwriter, it's important to understand the basics of music theory such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and chord progressions.

2. Practice songwriting: The more you practice songwriting, the better you will become. Write songs as often as you can, no matter how good or bad they may be at first.

3. Collaborate with other musicians: Finding other musicians to collaborate with can help you learn new skills, and also provide different perspectives to your writing.

4. Invest in quality equipment: If you plan on producing your own music, it's essential to have quality equipment, such as a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and studio-quality headphones.

5. Promote yourself: Once you have created music, be sure to promote it on social media and other platforms. Share it with friends and family and ask them to share it too.

6. Take online courses: There are many online music courses that can help you learn different aspects of music production such as mixing and mastering, production techniques, and much more.

Remember, pursuing music is not an easy journey and will require patience, hard work, and perseverance. But if it's something you are passionate about, then it's definitely worth pursuing. Best of luck on your journey!

Kevin’s Answer

Writing and producing music is one of the most wonderful things a person can do in their life.

It can bring personal joy to the creators of the music and those who 'receive' the music through listening to recordings or seeing musicians in concert.

To get started in music it is advisable to find the kind of music a person loves to listen to and to make.
Doing what one loves creates a cycle of positivity.
If a person loves something then they are usually naturally enthusiastic about it and they will enjoy what they do and often will not need much motivation or encouragement to do it.

It can help a lot if one also loves a particular instrument or feels 'connected to one'.
This can be the voice; piano; guitar and all of the many others. This enables the musician to work out and develop their ideas.
Even if one does not feel that there is a particular instrument that they like, then a person can still get started!

A budding musician can begin by writing down their ideas (if they are lyrics or songs) or record them. You only need a cell phone with an app to record voice memos!

Today it is also possible to acquire recording software for one's own personal computer for a relatively cheap price compared to what it used to cost historically. These are called "Digital Audio Workstations" (DAW). The programs are essentially digital recording studios that allow a musician to record their ideas. In fact, many records are made today using only a DAW.

It is always useful to get help and advice from others who already make their own music.
It can help to work with others to learn from them and they from you.

Once a person has made the first steps to making their own music this can be something that they do for the rest of their life.
It often becomes a part of that person's existence.

If one has a desire to make music it is always something worth pursuing as a musician learns a lot about themselves by making their own music.
The benefits are many including: learning to develop one's creativity; learning an instrument(s); learning to play music with others; learning a 'new language' (the language of music such as notes, chords, scores); learning how to perform in front of others.

These skills are transferable and can be applied to many other disciplines.

Music enriches the soul and can make a person well rounded.
In many cases musicians are often 'more in tune with themselves' than others and much clearer in their identity and who they are as a person.

Kevin recommends the following next steps:

Start to write and record the musical ideas that you have.
Listen to the ideas and refine them.
See if there is an instrument you like a lot and take steps to learning it. For example, if it is the guitar (if you can afford one, get advice from a store and buy one!) If you can't afford one see if you can hire one or if someone has one that they no longer use.
Talk to other musicians and friends to find out how they learn about music. See if there are colleges offering courses or ways to learn about music.
Find out about the subject of "music therapy" and how music is used to heal. Keep asking questions and follow your dreams!
