Hi! Great question. This is hard to answer without narrowing down the exact career you are looking for. Becoming an engineer has a completely different educational path compared to becoming a mechanic.
Becoming an engineer requires a bachelor's degree to start. Becoming a mechanic requires either an associate's degree from a community college, or a certification from a trade school. Becoming a mechanic may also require some type of apprenticeship, depending on what type of mechanic someone wants to be.

Thanks for the question: It roughly takes 4 years to be an entry level professional in the automotive industry, assuming you are doing an undergraduate career. Your steps can be summarized as follows:
1. Build fundamental skill-sets from coursework in first year
2. Take part in clubs (Formula SAE, or Electric Vehicle Club)
3. Based on 1 and 2: do internships/co-ops in the automotive industries to get practical experience while you are still at school
4. Jobs: Apply for jobs after completing a senior-design project (if-possible get it sponsored by industry)
