How do I start getting vet tech experience when they often require prior experience to hire you?
I have been struggling to discover an internship or a facility that will hire me as most of the vet tech assistant jobs often require prior experience. How am I supposed to get the 'prior experience' necessary to be accepted in these jobs if I've never had one?
I am very fortunate to have pretty basic medical handling skills and abilities, such as proper restraint, muzzling, intramuscular injection, medicating orally, taking and interpreting vital science, and taking and reading fecal samples. I have also assisted in the birth of livestock, monitored pregnancy in a mare, and have worked as an animal shelter technician for more than a year.

If you have not already, create a resume with all of the things you have learned and where you did them. Make certain you have your volunteering at the animal shelter on your resume. And it would be help with any and all references that have seen you doing all of the experiences that you have listed. Don't give up when you are not accepted for any jobs you apply for; most everyone that starts out applying for jobs takes dozens of times before getting the one that they really want. Be persistent in applying and keep doing as much volunteer work that you can to build up your resume.
