Great question. I would suggest looking up your local Fire Department. They will have information for applicants (people who want to be a firefighter) on their website. You could also check out their Facebook/Twitter pages for info. If you are unable to find anything, go visit your local department (just walk right in) and tell them you are interested in joining their team. If they are not busy, I'm sure they would love to help you and let you know what you need to do next and how you can prepare for the tests.
Look up the department's website online
Go visit your local fire department

Regarding the prospect of walking into your local fire station, it is important to note that currently, most fire stations are closed to the public due to the ongoing concerns about COVID-19 exposure. However, you can still gather information about your local station through an online search. This will provide you with their phone numbers, and I would highly recommend calling them to arrange a visit at an appropriate time.
Most large fire departments organize recruitment events or offer volunteer opportunities such as cadet programs or Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) initiatives. As mentioned previously, volunteering is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the role of a firefighter, receive valuable mentoring, and establish connections with professional firefighters.
To become a firefighter, a high school diploma is typically required, along with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. EMT certification courses are available through numerous community colleges; they usually span a semester and have specific requirements. It is essential to note that EMT classes tend to be very popular, so it is advisable to check with your local community college well in advance to ensure your participation in their program. For example, Glendale Community College offers a comprehensive EMT program for interested candidates.
Physical fitness is a crucial aspect to consider, given the demanding nature of a firefighter's job. It is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle and engage in smart workout routines to prepare oneself for the physical challenges that come with the profession.
In closing, I hope that you find this information helpful and informative as you explore your interest in becoming a firefighter. I wish you the very best of luck in your journey. Stay safe and take care!
Sincerely,
Mary Jean

Hi, Brian!!!
T.J.’s answer is great advice - almost all the career firefighters I’ve worked with started as volunteer firefighters in their communities.
In addition to becoming a volunteer firefighter, check with your local (and those in your surrounding communities) fire department to see if they have a Fire Explorer program. You can generally enroll in Explorer programs as a young teen so it really gives you a leg up on the learning curve.
Best of luck!

Hello Brian!
To become a firefighter, you'll usually need a high school diploma or GED and hands-on training. Most people start off their careers volunteering in their communities.
After volunteering, you can get further education either at a fire academy or two year program. Some community colleges or trade schools can provide training!

First, you need to apply for the firefighter exam.
Next, you will want to prepare for both the written and physical portions of the exam.
Once you have taken and passed both portions of the exam, your name will be placed on the list to be considered for hire.
