Is being an author really a stable job?

I have been thinking about a career as an author and thought that it is something that I'm very interested in. I do have some doubts about whether that would be a stable career choice, it doesn't seem to be a sure thing.

Thank you comment icon First off, if you’re asking yourself and others this leading question, then writing may not be for you. Writing is a skill set that requires a lifestyle change. You must first live the life of a writer and be okay with the fact that you may never be published. Additionally, if you’re asking this question at a point in your life where college is an option, then I highly recommend getting at least an undergraduate degree in journalism. Journalism is a great way to learn the basics of English Composition in a professional setting. Lastly, doubt is omnipresent, regardless of career path. My recommendation is to write one thought a day and read one page a day. If you can manage these small daily tasks, this can and will develop into the lifestyle you are looking for. Dennis Barbosa

That question was mine some years ago, and it's a good question to ask yourself. As the author of 11 books, I have some advice to share. Write your first book or two or three. If they sell readily, you can write full-time. If they sell slowly, you need something else to do as well. If they don't sell at all, keep writing anyway. And keep trying. You will enjoy the writing itself, and your writing will improve. Writing is its own passion. Whatever career you choose, keep a pencil and pad always handy.

Hi Koumba! It's fantastic to hear that you're reaching out and considering writing a book. While I may not be an author myself, my head is brimming with ideas that I'd love to bring to life someday. It's true that many authors find inspiration in their primary careers, whether it be at a university or in the corporate world. In fact, having a full-time career and writing on the side can provide a unique and valuable perspective in your work.

Writing offers an incredible sense of freedom, allowing you to take control of your time while pursuing a passion. There's nothing quite like chasing after your dreams and fully embracing your creative side. As David mentioned, it's essential to follow your writing interests and see where they lead you on your journey to becoming an accomplished author.

Keep in mind that every writer faces challenges and occasional setbacks, but what truly matters is that you never give up on your dreams. Stay persistent, learn from your experiences, and continue to strive for success. With hard work, dedication, and a little encouragement, you'll be surprised at what you can achieve. Remember, the world is waiting to hear your unique voice and stories, so go for it and let your talent shine!

Dino recommends the following next steps:

Attend special class on book writing.
Get a good mentor in book writing.
Read, Read a lot to broaden your ideas about writing as a career.
