How do you respond to interview questions?

I've been struggling on how to respond to questions during interviews such as "why us," "where do you see yourself in the future," "how does this job fit within your goals," etc.
Any help?

Elena’s Answer

I think you need to remember that you are selling your values and abilities, not yourself. And tell them what you can contribute.

Elena recommends the following next steps:

Do a self-assessment of your capabilities and desires.
Research industries and positions that are fitting and align with you.
Take classes to learn the skills you need to succeed in what you want to o.

Its always a good idea to prepare by having a few answers or scenarios that you've thought out ahead of time. Practice saying them but don't memorize. Just make yourself familiar with telling those stories and it will end up sounding like a well spoken natural answer.

Daniel’s Answer

Hi Jason!

Interviews can be tricky and uncomfortable at times. However, with the right mindset and being prepared they can be less daunting.

When it comes to companies asking "why us" I would be open/honest with the company on why you are applying. When I interviewed at Six Flags they asked me the same question. I told them because I really like roller coasters, being around people, and it sounded like a fun job! I don't think that answer is why they hired me but I think it did help.

The "where do you see yourself in the future" question is hard because no one knows what the future holds. What the company is really asking is "do you think you will still be with us a few years down the road." My suggestion is before the interview think about if you do get hired by this company what skills would you like to learn and what is your end goal? Maybe its being a manager or learning new skills. The company just wants to know that you have given this some thought.

Companies that ask the question, "how does this job fit within your goals" is really trying to ensure that you have career/life goals. I think some companies get a bit nervous when individuals have no career/life goals. If you do not have any goals then I would encourage you to think of some beforehand. They don't have to be lofty goals.

Good luck on the journey!

Anoop’s Answer

Be authentic! If you're applying for a job the best outcome for the company AND the candidate is if the candidate is truly attracted to what the opportunity presents. As such, it is always a good idea to reflect on this question prior to the interview and be ready to address the areas that compel you to consider the company. Answer to yourself: What do I like about the products this company makes? What do I like about their vision and mission....how does that resonate with my own philosophy in life? What do I like about their culture...and how does that mesh with my own expectations....do I want to work in such a culture? It's often a good idea to address these questions with other panelists and/or earlier in the interview so you're creating a response in your mind for this question.
