Vicki’s Answer

1.) What profession did you choose? Audiology
Why? Lifelong fascination with sign language.

2.) How many years of college did you
need to go through? at the time 6. I am now almost finished with 2 more to get a doctorate

3.) What jobs did you work before you
landed your present professional
job? Nothing really. Babysitting. Answering phones, Filing.

4.) How can I decide if I should earn a
Ph.D. in this field? There are 2 doctorate paths. PhD is more research based. AuD is more clinically based. If you are just going through programs now, you will NEED a doctorate.

5.) Were you in a college program? Not sure what this means?

6.) Did you have to pivot and go back to
school at a later date? Yes. I had been working for over 25 years with my Masters Degree. When I moved to TX, they require a doctorate to be state licensed.

7.) Did you shadow another
professional in the field? You do a 9 month Certificate in Clinical Competency for the ASHA governing board. But at least its paid.

8. ) Did you join any school clubs
related to your current profession? NSSHLA

9.) Was there a particular subject you
struggled with during your school
years? History. English

10.) What skill sets did you learn or
gain while pursuing your career? Counseling skills, of course much of the audiology related stuff.

11.) What are some hard and soft skills you need for this field? Compassion, empathy, critical thinking.

12.) What advice do you have for someone who wants to come into this field of work? You need to be good at working with people. Be prepared as some places may have you as basically a hearing aid dispenser and crush you with selling demands.

13.) Did you do any internships? If so what did you do and how were you able to get the internship? You do an internship in your final quarter/semester for a Masters, but that was a long time ago. You were required to find it yourself, but I ended up having one of my teachers helping me.
