Hi Alaric,
Great question! First off; start studying what online merchants and/or platforms are being successful and why? What is it they are offering and/or supplying that consumers are drawn to? Additionally, what is the story of how that merchant came to be? Essentially, much of the main topic/question discussed here is business development/management with full consideration for the storefront being the internet/web. As a result, having a strong knowledge of how consumers buy services/products online or the web-based consumer as a whole is extremely important.
I would also suggest understanding technology well, and being up-to-date on the trends within our society, markets, and the economy in general. This will supply you with the ability to develop and offer exactly what it is that drives your business forward. It also is the reason that often times people start in an entry-level position and work their way up as they gain an understanding of the day-to-day components of the business so they can progress. Starting with that concept, what is it you can offer right now to an online consumer? Be simple and develop a business that can sustain itself for a few months without losing money. This will provide the 'big picture' of how to be an online merchant from start to finish in the entire process. From there, add in and/or change to offer solutions/services that you develop, are more profitable, and/or come from skills you have progressed or can now offer.
