Hi Anai! I am a genetic counselor and I can try to answer your questions:

1. What profession did you choose? Why?
I chose genetic counseling as my profession due to a strong interest in human genetics as well as wanting to be involved in direct patient care and education.

2. How many years of college did you need to go through?
Four years of college and two years in a MS program.

3. What jobs did you work before you landed your present professional job?
I worked as a clinic manager and a nanny before I went to graduate school. After grad school I have only worked as a genetic counselor in a few roles.

4. How can I decide if I should earn a Ph.D. in this field?
A PhD is not required/recommended for genetic counselors.

5. Were you in a college program?
Yes, I have a Bachelors and a Masters.

6. Did you have to pivot and go back to school at a later date?
Genetic counseling requires a higher degree program, so it wasn't a pivot so much as a continuation.

7. Did you shadow another professional in the field?
Yes I did.

8. Did you join any school clubs related to your current profession?
No.

9. Was there a particular subject you struggled with during your school
years?
Chemistry was not my jam.

10. What skill sets did you learn or gain while pursuing your career?
Active listening, explaining complex topics at a patient friendly level.

11. How did you feel through this process emotionally and physically?
Tired but it has been well worth it! Very rewarding.

12. Was youre family supportive of you?
yes

13. Were there any sacrifices you had to make.
Not really.
