Hi Jack!

It varies per state, but almost every state requires graduation from a Dental Hygiene Program. It generally takes around two years to complete the program. You can search for "dental hygiene programs near me" on google, and look at schools/programs that are accredited by the American Dental Association.

Being in the dental profession is a very rewarding career. Even if you start out as an assistant and get the feel of the terms and the line of work, you will have some background in the dental field. Some Dental Hygiene programs are hard to get into, as they only take a limited number of students every year. Having some prior experience in dental such as an Assistant would be very helpful!

Some dental offices will train you as an assistant on the job. There are many wonderful benefits within the dental world!

Myrissa recommends the following next steps:

Reach out to dental offices in your area to see if you can "shadow" a hygienist or assistant.
Look into dental hygiene programs accredited by the ADA near you.
Have fun!

Hey, its great to hear you are interested in the dental field! In the US, I believe you can become a hygienist after obtaining a bachelors degree which a 3 year course from an accredited college/university and this is very similar to how the UK system works! In the US however, there may be an exam you need to pass to practice.

So a dental hygiene degree is an Associate's or Bachelor's and there are pre-requisites that must be taken before being accepted into the program!

Hey there, to become a dental hygienist you do not need a master, you will need a high school diploma or equivalent. You need to apply and complete a dental hygienist program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Program duration may vary, but it typically takes two years to complete an associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. Good luck!
