Angelica Rossana’s Answer

Hi Caitlin,

If you own a business for medical-services (e.g., a clinic) and wish to be your own accountant (instead of hiring one), then you can be both roles. However, if you want to be more of an accountant for any employer in the medical field (e.g., hospitals, clinics), then you can choose to work as an accountant for such companies/organizations.

Alternatively, if you are looking to just experience both in your lifetime, you can finish medical school while taking some accounting classes (or even getting an accounting certificate) and perhaps spend most of your career being in the medical-field and then switching over to accounting once you feel the time is right. I would say it is important for you to finish medical school if you want a career in medicine but it is doable to work in accounting without an accounting degree (of course there are certain jobs/roles that require you to be a Certified-Public-Accountant (CPA) but that is up to you if you want to have that kind of role given that accounting may be your second choice of career).

There is no limit as to how many careers you choose to have. Usually, it is a question of how much you want to spend on education/switching careers. But as long as you are doing what your heart desires, any cost of doing it should be worth it.

Good luck!

Best regards,
Angelica

Another area to consider is health administration management . Some health professionals such as doctors and nurses pursue MBAs or health administration management at a masters or bachelors level where you can take accounting courses and other business operations management courses that can applied in hospitals and community care settings . I think it's critical that clinicians especially in a management role have some appreciation of how accounting works or what functions they need as it's important when making critical decisions on funding for health care and what information they need from accounting professionals. some other areas to consider are health economics , health evaluation , and decision support / business health analytics departments where having an appreciation of accounting practices and world of clinical medicine makes understanding the cost benefit of various medical treatments , cost of specific services in a hospital , and evaluating the financial aspect of a health program much easier . Though for any of these areas you can easily enter with an accounting / business / economics background and apply such education in a health care environment in the roles that I have just mentioned .

Hello Angelica,

I highly recommend that you explore opportunities in the data analytics field where you can utilize tools like Power BI, Excel, and SQL. Imagine, for instance, a hospital that needs to strategically allocate its resources. They need data on the number of patients they're serving, the volume of patients each doctor handles, and the variety of services they're providing. Your accounting skills could be incredibly valuable in this context, aiding in budgeting tasks or even helping to secure grants. Wishing you all the best in your journey!

Providing accounting services for a company associated with medicine. They are not very interrelated. Perhaps if it is a smaller company involved with medicine you may be able to involve yourself in both roles, but that would not make sense to me unless you were starting your own company.
