Noah’s Answer

Both degrees enable you to work as a counselor, but substance abuse may have a narrower focus, while addiction is more broad. The specific degree title may vary among schools. For example, one institution might offer a degree in Psychology with a Concentration in Addiction, while another might call it Concentration in Substance Abuse, but both could cover similar topics. The main difference may lie in the field of social science. Psychology can be geared toward research or clinical work, while social science is much more general.

Ultimately, your career choice will determine the best degree for you. To become a therapist or addiction counselor, you'll need a Master's Degree, and your undergraduate major may not be as important.
