What jobs do you recommend for young people who have no experience but are looking to build soft skills?

My recommendation is to consider part-time positions such as retail, fast-food, or camp counselor roles. These jobs provide valuable experience in interacting with diverse individuals, improving your presentation skills, punctuality, and more. These essential soft skills can be applied to any future career!

This is truly a great question!
I would recommend a young individual who does not have any experience, but would like to learn should take partake in a retail job. I have worked first-hand in retail, and can simply say that I am grateful and proud that I had the opportunity to work within that setting. It gave me the confidence and initiative to speak to others in a way that made both them and myself feel comfortable. By allowing this to happen, I also gained a sense of responsibility and ownership in which I was in charge of fellow other employees beyond myself. This, I would say, is a great representation of what you can learn in order to utilize that knowledge for the long run. Now, I am currently an HR Administrator and can say that, without having that knowledge from a retail standpoint, I would not be able to work at my current location. Having a customer service attitude, as well as a sense of how to talk to people within my current profession is something that I can say I've learned within the retail industry, and something I will always appreciate throughout the future.

I would have to agree with Molly communication is important and you can practice those skills almost anywhere. I also agree with Keith that soft skills are necessary regardless of where you plant your seed. Caution! You should not mismanage your time with non-relevant things. If you want to be in the medical field but are unsure where to start, volunteer in the hospital, get a CNA certificate, or get a part-time job in a clinic or hospital. Basically, channel your energy toward the direction you are going. The more you do the more experience you will gain. Gaining soft skills and implementing them into your daily activities is no cookie cut. Sounds basic but food service. Hospitality helps to give experience communicating directly with a diverse customer base and develop. Service, as a basis, whether for pay or non-profit, will develop soft skills.

Any job where you are working serving customers whether it in the food industry, retail, travel and so many others will prepare you for building empathy which is so important to keep in mind every day. You never know what someone else is going through on their growth path.
