BECOMING AN ELECTRICIAN: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

To become an electrician in California, follow these simple steps:

1. Enroll in an approved trade school or apprenticeship program that offers at least 720 hours of electrician instruction. This should include a combination of hands-on training and classroom lessons.

2. Gain 8,000 hours (about 4 years) of on-the-job experience, which can also be part of your apprenticeship.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to a successful career as an electrician. Best of luck in your journey!

Warm regards,
Tara

Shane’s Answer

First thing: get started in a trade school or get a job under a licensed electrician. Either is fine. My state requires 8000 hours to sit for your journeyman exam. 2080 hours a year is what you get from a 40 hour/week job. You can use a 2 year electrical program at a trade school to get 1000 hours per year, or 2000 hours total. So roughly 4-5 years total as either a student or as an apprentice before you can try to get your journeyman license. That’s for my state. I would guess other states are very similar, but I’ve never checked.
Master electrician exam requirements are another 8000 hours as a journeyman.
