Thank you comment icon Hi, Destiny, Having that degree opens up your career options substantially. The challenge is in evaluating what companies are seeking and then assessing whether that will springboard you to where you want to be. Specifically, the initial job may not be where you want to specialize, but if the company looks strong and you like where they're going, then the first job just needs to be fulfilling and challenging to you, although it will most likely not use the management skills you learned. A small company may see the management skills as paramount, but the upward ladder may be short, whereas a larger company may see you as an excellent potential analyst or server administrator, but the upward ladder is extensive. I encourage you not to expect any specific job title. All the best to you. david kirk

Scott’s Answer

Hi Destiny! Firstly, congratulations on pursuing your degree in IT management! I agree with Anna's suggestions - try to land any internships/externships/entry level positions that can help get you exposure to the industry. Think of your first few roles as an opportunity to explore what you like and don't like, and use those to guide your career in a direction that aligns with your goals and values. As these roles will help you practice your hard skills, I'd also recommend trying to sharpen your soft-skills as well. Learning how to integrate your technical expertise with your ability to connect with others is the secret ingredient to accelerating success in the IT world.

Scott recommends the following next steps:

Find people that work in roles you're interested in
Reach out to them and try to schedule conversations with at least 5 people in these roles
Begin researching companies you'd like to work for

Anna’s Answer

I strongly recommend pursuing an internship at organizations that provide technical career growth initiatives before completing your studies. Start by exploring prominent companies, as they frequently present such prospects. Internships not only equip you with valuable experience for your post-graduation job hunt but also pave the way for securing a full-time position. Concentrating on businesses with well-organized technical advancement programs is advantageous, as they effectively propel your career forward. Moreover, this approach allows you to delve into various roles within the industry, helping you pinpoint the most suitable one for your future. Wishing you the best of success!

Anna recommends the following next steps:

Make a list of companies of interest - talk to school advisor if they have any partnerships with companies.
Research companies culture, career development programs, internships and pay structure.
