Steven’s Answer

Critical thinking and initiative. Math, engineering principles, and the like are all skills that will be taught in school and can be referenced throughout your career in manuals, books, guides, etc. The ability to look at a problem and critically analyze inputs and expected outputs is a skill that separates an engineer from a great engineer. Beyond critical thinking, having the initiative to continue to learn and push to be a better engineer throughout the entirety of your career is another piece that will set you apart from the crowd.

Dennis’s Answer

Hi Kailyn! I like Steve's answer. I would add: imagination or the ability to see things in a different way. Juxtaposition. Curiousity: why is this thing made that way. Can I find a better way? As Steve says, you can learn the math and the physical principles in the classes you take. Problem-solving,in terms of using your creativity and ability to see different options is something you have to practisin e on your own. Good luck, Kailyn.

David’s Answer

I agree with the previous answers, especially Dennis' comment on curiosity - a healthy sense of curiosity is a trait that will serve you well. As you have already learned by posting the question, the ability to ask good questions can work wonders. Furthermore:
1) In the process of asking questions, you will also determine your constraints. Constraints are extremely valuable tools for setting the scope of a project. These will answer questions like: How much should it cost? How much can it weigh? What color do we want? Will it be exposed to UV light? Etc.
2) You will work with a team, and many times the engineer is also in a leadership role. The ability to work well with others cannot be overstated. Your humility will allow others to openly share their ideas and experiences to make the end result even better.

In conclusion, maintain your curiosity and humility. They will serve you well.
