How would one start to apply for grants and scholarships and where?

A great place to look for grants and scholarships is online. Often times you can just look up scholarships near me and information can pop up. But for more personalized advice, it's usually always a great idea to meet with school advisors/counselors as they will have information about a bunch of local scholarships that you can apply for. They are usually a fantastic resource and can work with you to edit your essay and make it super polished!
