Hello Jocelyn!
Steps to Ensure College Admission as a Freshman
1. Focus on Academic Performance
Maintain a Strong GPA: Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most critical factors in college admissions. Aim for a GPA of 3.0 or higher, as many colleges have this as a minimum requirement.
Take Challenging Courses: Enroll in honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes if available. These courses not only boost your GPA but also demonstrate your willingness to take on academic challenges.
2. Develop Good Study Habits
Create a Study Schedule: Establishing a consistent study routine helps you manage your time effectively and prepares you for the increased workload in high school.
Seek Help When Needed: Don’t hesitate to ask teachers for help or consider tutoring if you’re struggling with certain subjects.
3. Get Involved in Extracurricular Activities
Join Clubs and Organizations: Participate in school clubs, sports teams, or community service organizations. This involvement shows colleges that you are well-rounded and engaged.
Pursue Leadership Roles: Take on leadership positions within these activities when possible, as this demonstrates initiative and responsibility.
4. Build Relationships with Teachers and Counselors
Engage with Your Teachers: Building rapport with your teachers can lead to strong letters of recommendation later on.
Meet with Your School Counselor: Regularly check in with your counselor to discuss your academic progress and college aspirations.
5. Explore Career Interests
Participate in Career Exploration Programs: Look for internships, job shadowing opportunities, or career fairs that can provide insight into potential career paths.
Consider Volunteering: Engaging in volunteer work related to your interests can enhance your resume and provide valuable experiences.
6. Start Preparing for Standardized Tests
Familiarize Yourself with SAT/ACT Formats: While you may not take these tests until later years, understanding their structure early can help you prepare better.
Consider Practice Tests: Taking practice exams can help identify areas where you need improvement.
7. Research Colleges Early
Explore Different Institutions: Start researching various colleges to understand what they offer and what their admission requirements are.
Attend College Fairs and Information Sessions: These events provide valuable information about different schools and programs.
8. Maintain a Positive Online Presence
Be Mindful of Social Media Activity: Colleges often review applicants’ social media profiles; ensure that yours reflects positively on you.
Create a Professional Email Address: Use an appropriate email address for all college-related communications.
9. Stay Organized
Keep Track of Deadlines and Requirements: Use planners or digital tools to track important dates related to applications, standardized tests, and scholarship opportunities.
By following these steps diligently throughout your freshman year, you’ll be setting yourself up for success when it comes time to apply for college.

Hello Jocelyn! Here are some steps you can take as a freshman. First, try to establish a solid connection with your school's guidance counselor. They have valuable knowledge about school programs that many might not know. Besides keeping your grades up throughout high school, take some time to get involved in extracurricular activities. Joining the band, playing sports, or being part of the student council can not only keep you engaged but also help create unforgettable memories with your classmates. Good luck!

Begin learning the importance of time management; this can be done by allocating time to study for each subject or assignment. Make it a priority to get good grades and when applying to college, explain that your academic record serves as proof of how serious you are about your education. While it is not a requirement, it would not hurt to get involved in extracurricular activities. Learn how to beef up your application, mentioning any academic rewards and participation in any clubs or activities, even if this was not apart of a organization. Begin venturing into Purdue Owl and Grammarly to improve your writing skills, not only will this help you in the application process but it may help you improve or maintain your grades now and that only makes your likelihood of attending school better.
Learn information about prospective colleges. For instance, if you want to be an engineer, mention that is precisely the reason why you chose to apply to the college. This is just an example, but you can use this with whatever your field of interest is. Utilize your school breaks to volunteer, even if it is just for a few hours, all you need to do is include this in your application and explain how your involved in different things, shows your ability to manage school and life.

Hey! The biggest thing that I recommend to prepare for college is participate in organizations that build your character, leadership skills, public speaking skills, and time management skills. Where I am from, we have a program called FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). This is a program designed to teach students how to become a leader, build their communication and public speaking skills, and connect them with others around the state and country. I would also recommend doing speech classes or being a part of Speech Club if that is an option for you. Also, if you have the opportunity to take college prep classes, or do college online - take advantage of that! It lets you get accommodated to the format of the college classes, and gives you a good head start on your first year! Good luck!!
Thanks for the advice.

Other than getting good grades, colleges will look at achievements that you have accomplished during your time at high school. So while being a high school freshman, one of the things you should look at is anyway to get achievements. Some examples of the following could be: obtain a major role in a club (president, vice-president, treasurer, etc), reach varsity in a high school sport, get a reward of some kind. Their are endless achievements of different calibers that you can consider. College recruits will often look at your achievements and grades to see if you are a good fit for their school.
I will use this advice as I prepare for my career.
