Hello Jamia, I trust you're doing well! I noticed in your post that you're embarking on your career journey. That's truly thrilling! You've also inquired about my job... So, let me give you a brief overview of my professional journey!
During my high school years, I had to quickly find a job to support my family with the bills. So, I turned to a job posting website, "careerbuilder", and applied for numerous entry-level positions in various fields like Sales, Marketing, I.T., Construction, and so on.
After weeks of applications and interviews, I was fortunate enough to secure a position at Tabba Global, a Computer/Electronic/Hardware store, as an entry-level PC Repair Technician. This job was genuinely fascinating! Here, I acquired the skills to fix and repair a variety of electronics, including iPhones, Androids, Tablets, Desktop Computers, Laptops, T.V.s, Cameras, and more. I learned how to troubleshoot common issues with Windows and MAC systems, solder electronic components to motherboards, and much more.
Following that, I landed a position at a Security Alarm company, installing commercial-grade Security alarm systems for businesses, including Control Panels, Cameras, Motion Sensors, and running electrical wiring based on electrical layout blueprints.
Subsequently, I enrolled in my local community college to pursue a degree in Information Technology. However, during my studies, I secured another position at Equifax's Security Operation Center (SOC) as a Vulnerability Assessment Analyst. This role provided me with valuable insights into identifying and remediating vulnerabilities in operating systems, network infrastructure equipment, and workstations using software tools.
Next, I joined CORL Technologies as a Vendor Security Risk and Compliance Auditor. Here, I developed the capability to conduct risk assessments on Third-Party Vendors and Partner Organizations in the healthcare industries, identifying strengths and weaknesses within vendors Applications, Products, and Information Security Programs.
Following that, I joined the Georgia Institute of Technology as a Sr. Information Security Risk and Compliance Analyst, where I contributed to the compliance effort for campus entities against regulations and standards.
Currently, I am working as a Senior Technical Compliance Manager at Intuit. In this role, I assist my organization in preparing for regulatory and third-party audits for Information Security certifications.
So, that's a snapshot of my professional journey. Here's some key advice I'd like to share with you:
• Pick a skill that's in high demand in the job market. (I chose IT/Cybersecurity)
• Don't fear mistakes! I've made plenty! Learn from them as they're bound to happen.
• Consider cost-effective options if possible. I didn't have much money growing up, so I went to my local community college to learn IT skills and earned certifications in my field.
• Keep applying! Breaking into the industry with no experience can be challenging. However, keep persist in applying to entry-level positions and internships.
• Seek mentorship, either in person or online. I learned a lot about Information Technology from "Professor Messer" on YouTube take his A+, Network+, Security+ courses.
I wish you all the success in your future endeavors.
Best Regards,

Isiah’s Answer
Hey Jamia! It's okay not to have "perfect questions", but I will do my best to answer this question and hopefully spark some encouragement in you!
For starters, I hope your day is well! My name is Isiah (eye-zay-uh), I have quite an interesting and diverse occupational background:
Over the years, I've gained experience as a logistics specialist with a range of skills in different areas. I've had the opportunity to work as an appliance technician while also dabbling in welding, plumbing, electrical and mechanic work which has allowed me to become a bit of a "jack of all trades". Serving the entire Dallas Metroplex, customer service was my biggest advocate while also following policies of multiple warranties that I had contracted with over the years.
Currently, I am a logistics specialist working for Masergy a Comcast Business. In this job, I focus on optimizing processes and improving inventory management with other responsibilities involving the evaluation and labeling of un-stocked hardware, leading physical inventories, and ensuring smooth movement and organization of overstock items. I handle daily tasks like keeping our databases updated and sending out ship notice emails to various customers while also following up to ensure efficient operations without our Logistics department. One of my areas of expertise lies in return hardware movement, network component configuration, and managing both domestic and international shipping while ensuring compliance with customs regulations.
I take great pride in providing exceptional customer service and adhering to rigorous policies. I truly enjoy hard work, and I'm always looking for ways to enhance my skills and contribute to the success of the team.
In addition to my work as a logistics specialist, I also am currently pursuing my dream of becoming a mechanical engineer. I've taken the exciting/tiring challenge of going to school full-time while still maintaining a full-time job. This has taught me to time manage and balance every decision, but I am determined to achieve my goals and make the most of my opportunities. Despite my busy schedule, I find that both my work and my studies complement each other. The problem-solving skills and attention to detail I've honed as a logistics specialist are directly applicable to my studies in mechanical engineering. It's been an incredible journey of growth and learning, and I'm thrilled to see where it takes me in the future.
Ready for a surprise? I am only 22 years old! Pretty impressive to accomplish quite a lot already huh? I want to emphasize that it's never too early or too late to pursue your passions and ambitions. Age shouldn't be a barrier to achieving great things. As a student, you have the chance to explore various paths and expand your horizons. Don't be afraid to take on challenges, as they often lead to the most rewarding experiences and personal growth. Always remember that you are capable of accomplishing amazing things, just like I've been able to do at such an early age. Pursue your dreams with dedication, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude, and you'll be surprised at how much you can achieve. If I can do it I believe you can as well!
All in all, keep your spirit high, stay focused on your goals, and believe in yourself! With hard work, perseverance, and a passion for learning, there is no doubt you'll go on to achieve remarkable things in your journey as a student and beyond. As every mentor will say, we are all cheering you on every step of the way, so chin up and never forget to stop smiling! If you need any additional support please feel free to reach out and we will be happy to help!
Stay curious. Curiosity fuels innovation!

Hey Jamia, don't worry if you're not sure what to say, I've got some suggestions that might just help you out!
Firstly, try to discover what really sparks your interest. Do you see yourself as a future doctor, or maybe crunching numbers in an office? Perhaps you're more of an outdoors person, selling products in the field, or maybe you're a tech whiz, coding in a cubicle. You might even see yourself working from home, managing administrative tasks, or lighting up a stage with your performance. Whatever feels right to you, that's what you need to figure out.
Next up, if you're still pretty young, it's a great time to start thinking about what your life's purpose might be. Do you want to amass wealth, and if so, why? Maybe you're drawn to community service, but what's the reason behind it? What really gets you excited? Is it teaching, learning, or maybe something else? Think about how you can make a positive impact on the world, right from your own corner. Knowing your purpose can help you set long-term goals and clarify the path you'd like to take to reach them.
Once you've nailed down your interests and your purpose, it's time to gain some experience. This could be through internships, or by asking if you can shadow professionals in their jobs to get a feel for the work. Don't forget about the internet - it's a treasure trove of information about all kinds of careers.
After you've done all this, I'm sure you'll have heaps of questions and plenty to talk about. Remember, you're fortunate to be living in this world at this time, where everything is fresh and exciting. Think of your life as a blank book, just waiting for you to start writing your story. Best of luck to you - but remember, luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. You've got this!

Hi Jamia!
Phew! Starting a career journey is exciting and intimidating at the same time. There so many options out there. Where to start, right?
I love that the previous folks advised you to look for activities that sparkle your interest. That's a great advice for sure.
I'll try to give some tips and tricks about how you can start narrowing down the search for possible careers. Keep in mind that this is one of multiple ways you can do it, ok?
1) Get pen and paper
2) List the things you like to do. Example: I like teaching, I like puzzles, I like helping my grandmother doing things around the house
3) Now, for each of the thinks you like to do, make a sub-list with more specific skills, tasks, scope. I'll use "I like helping my grandmother" to expand the example. I can say:
a) I like to organize things for her
b) I like to implement things to make her more independent
c) I like to motivate her to do some physical therapy
d) I like to give her general health advice
4) Based on your list, you will start to see how it fits into a career. For step 3, the possible careers could be geriatric physician, physical therapist, home care nurse, things like that.
5) Once you start to narrow down some careers, I would recommend you to speak to some professionals in the field to hear their experiences. That will help you in your discovery process.
6) You might repeat the process above a few times.
Finally, I want you know that most people struggle with this topic. It's ok to take time to figure it out. It's ok to try one career and change it to another (I had 3 careers in the past 20 years), and it's ok if things are not perfect. Also, there are peeps that prefer a career that pays really well versus a career that they love. Some a luck to have both. The point is: there is no right and wrong. Do what you want to do now. You can always change!
I hope the above helps you. All the very best!

I get where you're coming from. Starting off in the career world can be a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Just like you, I began my journey without a clear path. It's about embracing opportunities that come your way and being open to new experiences. While I'm now a supervisor in facility maintenance, I didn't attend college, which goes to show that diverse paths can lead to fulfilling roles. The key is to stay curious, learn as you go, and never underestimate the power of hard work. You'll find your way, just like I did.
