It can get pretty overwhelming! Depending on how far out you are from applying there are basic steps.
1) Make a list of all the places you want to apply. Make an excel sheet with categories that will help you stay organized (location of the school, deadline of the application, have you turned in your application, etc).
2) Organize all the materials you will need, such as transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, demographic information about yourself and your family.
3) Find all of the aforementioned school's application sites. Some will have a common site you can apply to, some schools for personalized application sites. Make sure you know where to apply! NOTE: keep track of all the different website links, usernames and passwords!!
4) Getting started on the application: Make sure you have one outlined essay that you can use for the application essays. It won't match every single one perfectly, but it can help you not have to start from scratch every single time.
5) Make sure you have the funds to apply to all the places you want to, as applications all cost money.
6) Apply!

Are you interested in just getting general education classes done first? If so you can go to any community college will do. And if you stay close to home you can stay with family and save money for your chosen field.
The advantage of a community college is that you don’t have to be “accepted” most will accept you with just the application. You don’t have to compete to get into a university. This can also be good to show you have good grades and that you are dedicated to schooling.
Very best of luck.
