To secure a position as a tenured professor, which guarantees job security until retirement or any serious misconduct, a Ph.D. in your chosen field of study or research is generally required. This applies especially to larger institutions. However, at smaller liberal arts colleges and community colleges, obtaining tenure may be possible with just a Master's degree in your desired area of teaching or research. If your primary interest lies in teaching, consider the role of an adjunct professor. This position, available at various educational institutions, typically requires only a Master's degree in your chosen field.

Obtaining degrees in history is a plus and any experience you may have in history also helps. It is also my goal to be a history professor. I have 3 degrees on history and I am getting my PhD in education because I could not find an online program at a reputable school, but most history professors job listing require you to at least have a Master's degree in History. Since the pandemic, more colleges are providing 100% online college programs, like the University of Memphis, which offers a 100% online History undergraduate and graduate program. There are college courses on medieval history, so those jobs do and will exist. Focus on getting a college education in history and your minor should try to align with your history interests or a related topic like politicians science, archeology, sociology, and geography. Good luck! You will get there professor! I have placed a link to the University of Memphis' history program for a Bachelor and Master's of Arts degree so you can get an idea of an online program.
