How many hours can an Emergency Dispatcher(911 operator) work ?

I'm looking into becoming one once i get out of high school to have on my resume in case I decide to get into criminology, I would just like to know the limit of hours they are able to to work, time I don't think would be an issue for me.

That is such a wonderful plan you have - to be a 911 Dispatcher. You would be working in one of North Carolina's Public Safety Answering Points - PSAPs, as they are called in North Carolina. You would first take a 40 hour telecommunicator class which must be completed within the first year of your employment with them. The course must be certified by a North Carolina State or nationally recognized Emergency Services organization. The course includes 8 hours of hands on training and new operators must pass a competency exam. All 911 operators in North Carolina have to complete 16 hours of continuing education every year, with at least 8 of those hours focusing on a Board approved topic.

In this position, it is shift work. The only way to tell how many hours you can work is when you go on interviews at specific PSAPs, you can ask the interviewer what the work schedule is like regarding overtime. This varies from place to place so it's best to either call the office of the PSAP or ask during your job interview. This would be a decision that only the manager of the office would make.

I hope that this has helped a little and I wish you all the best in your pursuit of such an important career !
