How can I best manage my time when I'm busy with so many different things?

I'm entering my senior year and I'm worried about balancing all the different things on my plate. I need to focus on college applications and my school work but I'm also interested in joining clubs and playing sports. On top of this, I will probably be working. How can I manage all these responsibilities and still have some leisure time?

Your question pretty much answers itself. There's no magic formula. It's one you have to create for yourself based on your priorities. You shouldn't have to sacrifice any of these, including sleep and proper nutrition, but you will have to compromise. Your future comes first, along with your health, physical and emotional. Try a spreadsheet and see where your time is going. It's always a surprise. Leave time for sufficient sleep. It appears that you know what you need to do, just do it as best you can.

I would rank them by importance and then layer them in as your time ebbs and flows for example

1. School
2. Job
3. Applications
4. Extra Curriculars

So you will always be giving 100% focus to school. If that means you need to change your work availability to give you specific nights to study then you need to let your manager know that. After school and working your job when you have free time you need to focus your energy on completing college applications. The sooner you get them done the sooner you can move your extra free time to your extra curriculars. If all of that is said and done evaluate how much additional free time you have and what additional activities have time requirements that fit your availability. Be honest with yourself about what you're able to commit to and flexible as the needs of one thing to another may change. Try to be proactive in planning so you can maximize on your time and not be left with empty extra time that could be used for one of your commitments.

That certainly sounds like a full plate. I tell my 15 year old that school is his job and the more he puts into it, the greater chance that it will improve the life he could have on the other side.

Be aware of how you are doing. If you can do it all and keep up with it, that’s great! If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, you may need to pull back.

Hi Skylyn! That is a great question to ask and I totally understand your concerns as I was once in that same position. Like Alan said, health is very important and should always be your priority, whether that is physical or mental health. My best advice would be to take it one step at a time. Since it is your last year of high school, you also want to enjoy and cherish the experiences.

You mentioned several components, so a follow up to that is: Is your motive to participating in those due to personal interest or to "look good" for college? If it's for college then it may be too late as colleges typically look for several year commitment in sports, clubs, etc. If it's for personal interest, go for it!

Personally for me, I used a physical planner to record homework, future events, reminders, etc. It was very useful to see everything in front of me versus a digital planner. Time management is going to be your best friend if you are able to master it to your wanting! Of course, dedicate some time over the weekend if possible for self care, gardening, fun activities, etc.
