How long would it take to do a internship for surgeon work?

I want to know if it would take more than 8 years to do one, I wanna be a general surgeon

Thank you comment icon Internship I know this is really good for those who are not sure what they want to do. You will be able to see exactly how things are done. I also would suggest even being a volunteer. Or possibly once in college to maybe follow up with the School counselor for help in seeing what fits what you are looking for . Honestly one thing that I have learned is that what you do in school is not exactly the same as what you will be doing. School just provides with how to do everything but not really geared towards what each hospital or clinic you decide to work at. I hope that this helps you. Caroline V

Michel’s Answer

Yeah best way to become a surgeon is following Mandy’s advice. Make sure when you are in college you are working on things that medical schools like to see in applications. Some of those big things are good grades, leadership experiences, volunteering, working in the medical field where applicable, shadowing physicians, and research. If you are doing these things and maintaining good grades this will be the best way to get into medical school and meeting your goals.

Keyston’s Answer

Becoming a general surgeon usually takes a while, and it's a different path from my own. From what I know, after completing college and medical school, surgeons often go through a residency program that can last around 5 to 7 years. So, yeah, it might take more than 8 years, but it's worth it if that's your dream.

Mandy’s Answer

To be a general surgeon requires college courses enough to satisfy the prerequisite credits of biology, chemistry, etc. Then 4 years for Medical School, then at least 5 years of General Surgery Residency, that includes the first year as an Intern.
