Adriene, this is a great question. I think the answer will vary based on some factors, such as where you live, the requirements for certification, etc.
I would start with focusing on Psychology (focus on counseling) or Education as your field of study and get a BA . From my experience, many of these positions require a Master's Degree in School Psychology or Counseling and a license to practice. Some programs build the license into their degree so it might be good to look for that as a package deal.

So at the very least you will need a bachelor's degree, master's degree and teaching certificate. To be respected in the field, it's always best to have the experience as a teacher. In order to get a credential or certification in counseling most schools would like to know you've had the experience of being in the classroom. Pretty standard for most middle school/high school counselors.

Hi Adriene -- There's a national shortage of guidance counselors right now so this is awesome! You'll want to focus on getting a bachelor's and master's degree. As part of those programs, you'll be required to complete a certain number of hours of training. Essentially an internship. They often call them co-ops or capstones.
Your major for a bachelor's degree isn't as significant but I'd recommend something in the social work, counseling, education, or sociology fields. For your master's you'd apply for a specific counseling program and can search for one that has a concentration for middle school counseling.
