How do I know when I should get a job? Should I wait until after I graduate or should I try to get one now?

I am a senior in high school with limited transportation so job availability is very limited for me..

Thank you comment icon Great question! A few things I would think about: 1. What kind of work do I want to do? 2. Is there anything to motivate you to want to have a job? Save up for ____, job perks, or learning to become an adult or independent? If you have time now, and can think of some answers to the questions above, I'd encourage you to try looking. I'm not sure where you live but I hope you have access to public transportation to get to and from work. In addition to getting paid and building your experience, getting a job will help you learn about responsibility, time management, the reward of hard work, commitment, problem solving, customer service and more. There are also jobs that can be done at home or online. Not all require to be in person. Good luck!! Judy Park

Hello Hailey!

It's a great idea to get a job while you're still in high school. It allows you to save some money and helps you become more independent. However, it's important to remember that your studies should always come first. Don't let a job distract you from your schoolwork.

Learning about public transportation is a great idea. Do you have a parks and recreation department in your area? They often provide after-school care for younger children, and that could be a good opportunity for you.

Have you considered babysitting? What about local stores? Or perhaps a newspaper delivery job?

If transportation is a challenge, don't stress about it! There's plenty of time to work after you graduate. You're doing great, and your future is bright!

Hi Hailey,

You can work if you find a good job for your circumstances. Anyway, take your age into consideration and remember that your job should not have longer hours. What refers to transportation, you can work online as well.

Hello, Haley !

Since I would advise getting a job now, I would like to give you some advice that will hopefully help you. I will refer to work as either part time or full time because you did not specify what is doable for you right now. You also didn't mention your plans for college, so I will just focus on what you can do now and that will help you with what your future plans may hold. Part time may be more practical until you graduate.

I do believe that getting a job now would be great for some income and hands on experience. The first thing I would do would be to learn the public transportation system where you live and go to the businesses on that route to inquire about work. You can also write down the names of the businesses and than go to their websites to submit applications on line. If one of them calls you for an interview, you already know that the bus, train or something passes and stops by that business.

The second thing I would do is look for on line remote work, but you would have to be qualified for the jobs. Register at Indeed, which I always advise people to do, and create an account . You can set notifications for Remote Work. This way, transportation will not be an issue and when you are able to get a car, than your options will expand. Who knows, you just might like it better working remotely.

You should always look for a job when you feel ready. There's no one answer as to when to get a job - you will instinctively know when you should.
I hope that this has helped and I wish you well on whatever you decide.

I highly recommend avoiding high levels of student loans. If you can work some and pay for things along the way (without sacrificing your education), I think your future self will appreciate it.

I left school in a position where my monthly loan payments were nearly $800, definitely limited what I could do early in life.
