Judith-Ann’s Answer

Hello Gabby, I am not a cosmetologist or hair dresser, but I have some observations from being a client. A hairdresser must have all of these qualities to sustain their client load: 1. They must be physically strong on their feet all day and arms up and fingers cutting and combing, etc. 2. They must be able to tolerate extraneous music and noises playing constantly 3. They must be able to hear well and listen well. 4. They must have a lot of guts to take someone's hair into their hands and make them happy. 5. They must be willing to work on the weekends. 6. They must be willing to listen to critiques from clients. 7. And they must have really good boundaries to put up with complaints.
It's a very labor intensive profession that requires skill and talent and perseverance. If you enjoy the atmosphere of a beauty profession, then you should do fine in your training. Good luck to you in all that you do.

Haley’s Answer

Hi! I went to cosmetology school as a high school senior through an ROP program at my school. I didn't know much besides braiding my own hair and after 18 months in school, I learned so much! They will teach you everything you need to know. There isn't an expectation to be good at makeup, nails, or hair before you start. Cosmetology school is a lot of science, safety, and color theory. They will teach you all of that and prepare you for your state boards to get your license. Don't worry about learning anything before you start, the teachers will teach you all that you need to know.

Remi’s Answer

Good morning Gabby.

If you’re talking about the trade here are a few things:
- don’t worry if you feel that you still don’t know how to do a hair after graduation. The school is here to teach you the basics knowledge, the trade, you’ll learn at work.
-please know that your first year or two will be hard. Before you can build your book there will be slow days and little paychecks.
- make SURE you’re a people person and relatable. Keep in mind that being a stylist is also being your clients therapist. They will unload on you.
