What can I do to prepare and acquire a cyber security internship?

I'm halfway through my first year in my Cyber Security Master's program and I want to take any necessary steps to obtain the experience that I need to acquire a great job after graduation. I've never had any experience with applying to internships, specifically in cyber security and related areas prior to now and I want to be as informed as I can be in terms of what companies are looking for in their candidates. I would appreciate any advice I can get to better prepare myself and stand out in this competitive field. Thank you!

I have been hiring (but not currently) cyber security professionals and interns for over 23 years.   1. Is your resume up to date and best practice standards?  2. Is your LinkedIn Profile up to date and matching, where appropriate your resume?  3. How are you doing on your professional networking?  4. Make sure your LinkedIn SSI score is growing every week, your goal is to get to around 70. 5. Volunteer with organizations that use technology and help them secure their technology. 6. Volunteer at technology / STEM camps for kids.  7.  On your resume / LinkedIn, I am not looking so much for what you know, I'm looking for what your have DONE, then I will know what you know. 8. Study LinkedIn based jobs for your area of interest like (cyber) security and look for common themes.  9. Pursue Security+ certification 10. Have fun, great career.

The local chapters of not-for-profit organizations such as ISSA (issa.org) and OWASP (owasp.org) are a good meeting venue where you can meet and network with professionals who are involved with cyber security. They usually have monthly meetings and are always willing to help out.

Thank you comment icon Thank you Mr. Momartin I have heard about these organizations and will certainly follow up. Any advice I can receive from current security professionals will absolutely provide much needed guidance. Armando

Hi Armando - I don't experience with recruiting Cyber Security Interns. However, I found this very helpful article on Quora. Best of luck!

Thank you comment icon Hello Mrs. James, I found the article to be quite helpful and answered many of the questions that I had about preparing myself to get into cyber security roles. I think I'll be more prepared when I'm given the opportunity to intern. This is all new to me so any advice I can get related to cyber security is really appreciated. Thank you !! Armando

Free hands-on learning. TryHackMe, overthewire, HackTheBox, are all excellent resources and for the most part they are free or very cheap to take advantage of. Use them!
