What is a career path that can allow me to fulfill my passions of design/art and sustainability/helping people?

I have decided to switch universities as I was not happy. I realized I really enjoy helping others and inspiring people to be more sustainable. I have always cared about the environment and animals. I would love to find a career that also allows me to be creative or somehow includes art and visuals. I’m also entrepreneurial and enjoy leading.

Hello Isabella,

I’m Amit, I can help you explore career paths that combine your passions for design/art, sustainability, and helping others.

It’s great that you’ve identified your interests and are looking for a career that aligns with them. There are several paths you can consider to fulfill your aspirations. Here are a few suggestions:

Sustainability Specialist: As a sustainability specialist, you can work with organizations to develop and implement sustainable practices. You’ll have the opportunity to create positive environmental and social impacts while leveraging your creativity and leadership skills.

Environmental Designer: Environmental designers focus on creating spaces that are sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. This field combines elements of design, architecture, and environmental science to promote sustainable living.

Sustainable Product Designer: Sustainable product designers develop eco-friendly products that minimize environmental impact. This role allows you to combine your passion for design with sustainability principles.

Social Entrepreneur: If you’re entrepreneurial and passionate about making a difference, consider starting your own social enterprise. You can create a business that addresses social or environmental challenges while incorporating design and art into your products or services.

Sustainability Consultant: As a sustainability consultant, you can provide guidance to organizations on how to integrate sustainable practices into their operations. This role requires strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively.

Remember, these are just a few examples of career paths that combine design/art, sustainability, and helping others. It’s important to explore different options, gain relevant skills through education or training programs, and network with professionals in the field.

Switching universities can be a great opportunity to explore new academic programs or majors that align with your interests. Consider researching universities or colleges that offer programs related to sustainability, design, or entrepreneurship.

I hope this information helps you in your career exploration journey! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Isabella, there is a whole industry in the world of sustainable fashion, clothing, and vegan/plant based leather. Sustainable sourced fabrics and organic clothing textiles is becoming more and more in demand but there are not enough suppliers and manufacturers to keep up. I would look into programs at FIT in NYC and I am a graduate of the Sustainability program at Harvard University where our largest sustainability program is offered through the extension school which has open enrollment and you can design your own curriculum to what part of sustainability you want to specialize in. Harvard Extension School is one of the 12 degree granting schools of Harvard University and has the best program in Sustainable.

Francis’s Answer

Hi Isabella, there's a world of possibilities out there for you! The key is to find out what sparks joy in your heart when it comes to design and art.

If you're leaning towards a technical design career, architecture might be your calling. It's a field where you can make a difference by designing buildings that not only look beautiful but also have a minimal carbon footprint.

On the other hand, if you're more inclined towards the artistic side, creating fine art could be your path. You can use your talent to convey powerful and inspiring messages about sustainability, joining a community of artists who share your values.

Product or industrial design is another exciting field that blends design, art, and sustainability. But remember, this field is vast, and the career paths can vary greatly. Designing shoes, for instance, is a whole different ball game than designing cars.

It's also important to think about whether you see yourself as an entrepreneur or if you're more comfortable climbing the corporate ladder in your chosen field.

Remember, only you can decide what will make you feel fulfilled. If you can pinpoint this early on, you'll know which direction to head in.

As you move forward, you'll need to do some research. But remember, never stop searching for what brings you joy, provides a good living, and contributes positively to the environment and society.

Jessica’s Answer

Hi Isabella! Absolutely! Art and creativity are pivotal to the movement. Echoing others input here, there are many roles that might suit your interests and strengths. Climate communications is critical to help distill complex concepts or motivate people toward action. You could look into art builds and installations, digital media, and or social media as areas to checkout. There are artists who create complex illustrations to be used by storytellers to communicate about the climate crisis. Check out the Narrative Initiative for an example of this!
